Colorbond vs Timber Fencing in Townsville: Which Should You Choose?

It’s the question we get asked more than any other: should I go timber or Colorbond? Both are excellent fences, both are everywhere in Townsville, and the right answer genuinely depends on your block, your budget and how much maintenance you’re up for. Here’s how they stack up.

Upfront cost

Timber is almost always the cheaper fence to install. If you want privacy and security around a standard residential block for the lowest spend, treated pine paling is hard to beat. Colorbond costs a bit more upfront because you’re buying steel and the correct cyclone-rated hardware — but, as you’ll see, the gap narrows once you factor in the years ahead.

Maintenance and lifespan

This is where Colorbond pulls ahead. A Colorbond fence never needs painting, won’t rot, won’t warp and won’t be eaten by termites. A quick hose-down now and then is all it asks.

A timber fence is more hands-on. To get the most out of it in our climate you’ll want to keep sprinklers off it and re-oil or repaint it every few years. Looked after, a well-built timber fence will give you 10–15 years; Colorbond will typically outlast it.

Handling the Townsville climate

Here’s the part that matters most up here, and it’s true of both materials: the install matters more than the material. Townsville sits in a higher wind region, and a fence only survives a big blow if the posts are concreted to depth and the structure is built to the cyclonic spec — closer post spacing, deeper footings and the right bracketing. We’ve replaced plenty of fences of both types that failed simply because they were put in to a standard suburban spec. (More on that in why Colorbond fences blow over.)

Looks and privacy

Timber gives that warm, natural look that suits a Queenslander or a leafy backyard, and it can be stained or painted to match your home. Colorbond is sleek and modern, comes in the full steel colour range to match your roof or render, and gives you complete privacy with no gaps. It really comes down to the look you’re after.

So, which one?

  • Choose timber if you want the lowest upfront cost, a natural look, and you don’t mind a little upkeep.
  • Choose Colorbond if you want a modern, fully private, virtually maintenance-free boundary and the best long-term value.

The honest answer for a lot of Townsville homes is Colorbond for the main boundaries and timber where budget or look calls for it — and there’s no rule against mixing them.
