Do You Need Council Approval for a Fence in Townsville?

Good news first: for the vast majority of Townsville homeowners, a standard fence doesn’t need council approval. But there are a few situations where it does, and it’s worth knowing which side of the line your project sits on before you start.

The general rule

Most standard residential dividing and boundary fencing up to about 2 metres can be built without a building approval. That covers the typical timber, Colorbond or aluminium backyard fence.

Where approval can come into play:

  • Taller fences — going above the standard height threshold can trigger a building approval.
  • Pool barriers — these don’t need a “fence approval” as such, but they must meet the Queensland Pool Safety Standard, which is strict and non-negotiable. See our guide to pool safety certificates.
  • Fences on or near a corner/road frontage — sight-line rules can limit height near driveways and intersections.
  • Retaining walls — once a wall reaches a certain height, or carries load like a driveway above it, engineering and approval are usually required. We cover this on our structural landscaping page.
  • Heritage or character overlays — some older Townsville areas have extra rules on what you can build and how it looks.

Dividing fences and your neighbour

Separate from council, Queensland has dividing-fence law that governs fences between neighbours. In most cases a dividing fence is a shared cost. The friendly approach is a quick chat to agree on the style; if you want it formal, a Notice to Contribute sets out the proposed work and cost so everyone’s agreed before it starts. We’re happy to provide a clear written quote you can hand to your neighbour to make that conversation easy.

Where’s the boundary, exactly?

Building on the correct line saves a world of grief later. Your boundary is shown on your survey plan or title; if you’re not certain, a registered surveyor can peg it. When we quote, we work through the boundary with you so the fence goes in on the right line the first time.

Not sure where your project lands?

Approval rules change and every block is different, so treat this as a starting point rather than the final word. The easiest path is to ask us — we deal with these situations every week across Townsville and will tell you straight whether your fence is good to go or needs a tick from council first.
